Learning to use cloth diapers can be tricky but when you find what works for you and your baby it can be rewarding. We cloth because our kids have sensitive skin and the disposables make them break out. As it turned out cloth has been cheaper than buying packs and packs of disposables. We didn’t always use cloth diapers though with my oldest we used disposables as we weren’t as aware as we are now. With my second child, she would get rashes even if I changed her every 15 minutes, yes! She could be completely DRY and still get a rash. That’s when we decided there had to be something better out there. That’s when we started to use cloth diapers. Cloth diapers last so much longer, if you take care of them, we have used the gender neutral diapers with 2 kids now and the elastic is still going strong.
There was a whole lot that I have learned that I wish someone would have told me about cloth diapering. For an example a sprayer… why did I need a sprayer and what does it do? This would have been a great question to be answered, thankfully I have google…haha. I spent so much time trying to figure out what all I needed and what I didn’t need to start with. Most importantly you need the diapers and liners. I would say if you launder them daily you can probably get by without the diaper pail. I launder every 2 days so the pail is necessary for us. The diaper pail is where you put soiled diapers until you wash, some people wait until its full others do a half load, or you can have a set day to do the laundry. It doesn’t really add that much more work.
In case you were wondering the sprayer hooks to your toilet and you spray the poop off the washable liners with it. It comes in handy, but if you don’t have one you could always dunk the washable liner in the toilet and then place in the diaper pail or washer. You are able to store the wet diapers in the pail until you wash because there are no soiled diapers. You can also get disposable liners and just flush them or trash them. Wait stop the press…there are disposable liners. Yep! and most all the brands are biodegradable and flushable. So you are still making less waste with them.
Wow this is a lot to take in. I hope if you decide to use cloth diapers you do so because it is what works for you and your family. If you try to just join in on a fad and don’t go 100% in you can be spending more than its worth, and not understanding why you are not getting the same results as someone who has decided to cloth with research.
I wish you the best on your journey. Whether that be cloth or disposable diapers I hope you find what works for you and your family.
